Antron® Brand Redefines The Sustainability Conversation
“Getting It Right In Its Firsr Life™” Introduced At NecCon 2010
INVISTA’s Performance Surfaces & Materials division (PS&M) announced today that the Antron® brand is taking a stand to redefine the conversation around sustainability with the introduction of its “Getting it Right in Its First Life™” platform. This represents the brand’s approach to sustainability with products and practices that are focused on providing long-term product performance supported by enduring materials and responsible manufacturing.
The Antron® brand seeks a more comprehensive understanding of a product’s effect on our lives and the environment. First Life™ is defined as the time frame from when a new carpet is installed until it needs to be removed due to unacceptable appearance and/or performance. This approach supports existing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) models but expands upon them to incorporate performance testing, customer use and maintenance through the first use of the product.
“It’s time to rethink how the industry defines sustainability. Conventional wisdom within the commercial interiors industry has been that recycled content equals sustainability, but we think that’s only part of the story,” said Diane O’Sullivan, global marketing director of INVISTA’s commercial flooring segment. “We cannot look at single elements. We’re raising the bar with a holistic approach and making beautiful products that will exceed expectations, with the longest First Life™. Customers can be reassured that they are getting it right by selecting products designed for longevity to avoid premature replacement.”
The Antron® brand focuses on First Life™ because longer product life can play a significant role in reducing the environmental effects associated with premature consumption of resources required to replace or recycle carpet. Carpets made of Antron® fiber can last up to 75 percent longer than the majority of competitive carpets. By decreasing the amount of replacement due to wear and tear and loss of aesthetics, carpets of Antron® fiber can achieve to up to 38 percent lower energy consumption and 42 percent lower greenhouse gas emissions (expressed as CO2 equivalents).
“Because sustainability is constantly evolving, we strive towards getting it right in its First Life™ through continuous innovation and the integration of long-term performance; exceptional aesthetics; and innovative sustainable attributes of our products,” said O’Sullivan.
The consideration of First Life™ will give interior designers and end-users the information they need to carefully balance their specification decisions on the front end and avoid premature replacement, which can benefit the environment and reduce associated cost and disruption within a facility.
“Customers may feel overwhelmed with the complexities of LCA models and environmental attributes. We want to simplify the process and give our customers the confidence of knowing that they are getting it right each time they specify carpets of Antron® fiber,” said O’Sullivan. “By doing so, they will maintain the integrity of their design; increase ROI for their clients; and benefit the environment.”
