Cordura® Pack Wins Red Dot Award

August 4, 2004

WILMINGTON, Del. – The Air Balance II pack by Jack Wolfskin won the “red dot: best of the best” award in the category Leisure, Sports, Wellness and Caravaning. The red dot award is a prestigious European design award and an international seal of quality for outstanding design. Jack Wolfskin selected Cordura® fabric for the pack because it’s exceptionally lightweight and durable.

About the pack…

Movement and balance. Backpacking has changed. The routes we travel today lead into ever more remote regions and place high requirements on man and material.

Against this background the Air Balance backpack has been designed with an "energy balance system," consisting of three supporting plastic elements, which are fastened flexibly to the central aluminum rod. The shoulder belts and the lap belt are independent of the actual packing sack flexible, adapting to the natural walking movements of the body. The shoulder part moves horizontally around the central axis; the lap belt features a sophisticated tilting mechanism that conforms to the movements of the pelvis.

The backpack is held closely to the back at all times, without bouncing or dangling. The vital, curved aluminum rod stabilizes the weight, fixing it onto a plastic framework and making it rest safely on the crest of the pelvis with the help of the padded hip belt. Thus, heavy loads can more easily be carried with less strain on the muscles. While wearing the rucksack, made of breathable polyester foam, the energy balance system prevents heavy sweating due to a minimum of direct body contact zones. It leaves a wide, horizontal ventilation zone between the shoulder pads and the hip belt.

Innovative in this design is the additional ventilation that extends from the pelvis up to the shoulders, providing additional vertical air circulation. The use of materials developed in co-operation with INVISTA further reduces the actual weight of the backpack. The High Tenacity material is tightly woven from strong and durable Cordura® type 6.6 nylon thread; it is light and weather-resistant.
