POLYSHIELD® BARRIER RESIN FROM INVISTA MEETS ALL SPECIFICATIONS OF THE EUROPEAN UNION DIRECTIVE FOR FOOD CONTACT PolyShield® resins offer a major breakthrough for food containers in the European market with significantly improved oxygen and carbon dioxide barriers in monolayer containers WICHITA, Kan. - June 19 , 2006 – INVISTA, a leading manufacturer of PET, nylon, polymer, and resins, announced today that it has received a letter of opinion from legal counsel confirming that PolyShield® resin/MXD6 blends, its recently developed monolayer barrier technology, is suited for use in food packaging applications in the European Union in contact with all food types with the exception of fatty foods and foods with an alcohol content greater than 20%. The letter of opinion confirms that all monomers and additives used in PolyShield® resin/MXD6 blends are included on the respective “positive lists” in the EU Plastics Directive and that bottles made from PolyShield® resin and its blends with up to 10 percent MXD6 should meet the safety requirements of the Framework Regulation and should meet the migration limits of the Plastics Directive 2002/72/EC. PolyShield® resin/MXD6 blends provide excellent oxygen scavenging and passive gas barrier in combination with outstanding clarity in tinted monolayer food containers such as beer bottles. The significantly improved oxygen and carbon dioxide barriers allow bottles to meet shelf life requirements for demanding foods, such as beer, juice, and ketchup. In addition, the outstanding oxygen scavenging performance, PolyShield® resin eliminates any empty bottle shelf life issue. PolyShield® resin monolayer technology allows preforms to be produced on standard injection molding equipment with only minor changes, neither requiring any major additional investment nor adding complexity at the converter. The first beer and juice bottle applications using PolyShield® resin/MXD6 blends have already been successfully commercialized in Europe . “PolyShield® resin is a major breakthrough in providing clear monolayer plastic bottles for barrier applications such as beer, juice, and ketchup packaging. We believe that PolyShield® resin/MXD6 blends is the barrier technology most effective in providing the required shelf life for such oxygen sensitive foods without the conversion headaches of multilayer technologies,” said Chris Hamman, president, Polymer and Resins, INVISTA. “PolyShield® resins blends now meet regulatory requirements for all food contact, with the exception of fatty foods and foods with an alcohol content greater than 20%, in the European Union. We are pleased to have accomplished this important step to bring this innovative and unique solution to our customers.” #########
