Volunteers needed for mile-long South River Cleanup
INVISTA hosts community initiative to improve the city’s riverbanks
INVISTA is organizing a community effort to clean up a mile-long stretch of the South River. Volunteers are needed to join INVISTA volunteers and help with the cleanup on Saturday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to noon.
The South River cleanup project will focus on the riverbanks from Wayne Avenue to Main Street. In addition to INVISTA employee volunteers, an estimated 15 to 20 community volunteers are needed to complete the initiative.
Volunteers should arrive at the south parking lot of the YMCA, located at 648 S. Wayne Avenue, at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 5. Volunteers are asked to bring workgloves, water and bug spray, and wear long pants and water-resistant boots. INVISTA will provide trash bags and necessary equipment for disposal of waste.
“Being a good steward of the environment is an important component to how INVISTA operates its facilities,” said Brenda Kennell, INVISTA’s environmental specialist and site coordinator. “INVISTA continues to host the South River Cleanup as a way to help improve the health and vitality of our South River, and ultimately the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay.”
The South River clean-up is part of the region’s larger effort with the Potomac River Watershed Cleanup. In 2014, 671 sites in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. with over 14,000 volunteers participated in the clean-up project, which removed 288 tons of trash from the watershed. The South River is a tributary to the Potomac River, which leads to the Chesapeake Bay.
INVISTA’s Waynesboro site produces LYCRA® fiber, for end uses such as hosiery, sports apparel, and diapers. The site holds a Corporate Wildlife Habitat Certification/International Accreditation Program Certificate from the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) for establishing property for corporate habitat enhancement. INVISTA also maintains a successful eastern bluebird monitoring program and hosts an annual household waste collection day for the community.
