Local STEM students take metal to another level
What does a metal business card have to do with STEM education? Just ask the junior officers of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).
Recently, members of the Martinsville-Henry County chapter of the NSBE spent the afternoon at INVISTA’s Precision Concepts facility in Martinsville. The five members—who are high school students in Martinsville and Henry County—and their chaperones were given a tour of the facility to see INVISTA personnel and technology in action, and to discuss how INVISTA uses STEM knowledge to improve its products and processes.
“The importance of STEM education in our community cannot be understated,” said Tim Coble, site manager at INVISTA Martinsville. “The NSBE is making a lasting positive impact by providing STEM resources to local youth. INVISTA is proud to support this organization, as well as the curious and intelligent students it serves.”
At the end of the tour, the NSBE members had the opportunity to create their own metal business cards using INVISTA laser engraving technology. The cards featured their personal information alongside the NSBE and INVISTA Precision Concepts logos.
“There were lots of smiles, great questions, and discussions regarding continuing education, careers, and manufacturing in the real world,” said Coble. “We’re glad these students took the time to gain a deeper understanding of our facility and how INVISTA continues to create value for our customers.”
About the NSBE
The NSBE is a diverse organization that entitles children grades K-12 to engage in activities beyond school to enhance their knowledge in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). In order to advance the social, academic, and economic well-being of students and perspective college graduates, NSBE emphasizes STEM knowledge while being exposed to other leaders, cultures, and opportunities for growth and advancement at the NSBE National Conventions.
